As a Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Dr. Hershkop not only educates future medical professionals but also spearheads transformative initiatives in addiction treatment.
With a career spanning decades, Dr. Hershkop's impact is profound. In 1991, he blazed trails by establishing the second Methadone clinic in Ontario, laying the groundwork for accessible and effective opioid addiction treatment. His commitment to expanding access persisted as he established the first Methadone Clinic in Mississauga in 1998, followed by another milestone in Oakville in 2009.
Dr. Hershkop's influence extends beyond clinic walls. He played a pivotal role as a member of the inaugural Methadone Committee for the College of Physicians and Surgeons, shaping the regulatory landscape and ensuring quality care standards. His expertise was instrumental in drafting the initial regulations governing Methadone Doctors in Ontario and organizing what is now recognized as the Methadone Program in the province.
Always at the forefront of innovation, Dr. Hershkop helped introduce and evaluate the use of Suboxone—a vital alternative in opioid addiction treatment—in Ontario. His commitment to knowledge dissemination is evident in his role as a mentor and educator for fellow addiction professionals. As a founding member of the MMAP Mentoring Program for physicians and a member of its steering committee, he continues to nurture the next generation of addiction specialists.
